But Frankenstein is considered the first science fiction novel.
No. Frankenstein is considered the first science fiction novel written by a woman.
Frankenstein was published in 1818. There were several other scifi novels before that.
Most notably:
- The Man in the Moone (1638)
- Somnium (1620s &30s)
- Gulliver’s Travels (1726)
Then there is True History(Story), which was written in the 2nd century.
Mary Shelley wrote amazing science fiction, and remains one of my favorite scifi authors to date. She did many amazing things for the scifi genre, but she was not the first scifi novelist.
I wish it were true that she was the first, but she is not.
We should be celebrating the accomplishments she did make, not making up facts just because we want them to be true.
